Ion
Ion is the latest musical adventure from UK musician David Hughes, better known as the founding member of the late, lamented T-Bass UK, and the last man standing in the SkinMechanix collaboration.
A typical Ion track features dense, multi-layered textures interwoven with delicate sequencer lines and abstract sound collages culled from a wide range of weird and wonderful sources.
The Awakenings concert will feature new material from Ion, as well as a few carefully selected tracks from David's extensive back catalogue.
David is also celebrating 30 years of dicking around with synthesisers so you should expect some surprises too!!
Hashtronaut
Hashtronaut is a way of doing things, and embraces the ‘lets see what happens, as it happens’ ethos. The music is basic, simple and hypnotic. You hear it for the first time only seconds after the decision to use ‘that note or sound’. So be prepared for it to stand or fall...nobody knows what will happen.
Sometimes he brings people with him. The line up is fluid. You never know who will turn up, or what they will play. They usually look weird though and they like strange sounds too.
Hashtronaut does not want to be the greatest act on the planet. He is not really interested in even trying to be the best act on the night - he just gets a charge out of an audience that has the ‘ears of the heart’ willing to listen.
Von Haulshoven
My name is Eppie E Hulshof, Von Haulshoven is a Germanised version of this. I started playing classical guitar at age 17 then moved to electric guitar, playing in rock bands until I heard the music of Klaus Schulze, which had a big effect on me and my tastes changed to less rock and more floating music.
I bought my first synth in 1978 and experimented a lot in those days with electronics, guitar. I stopped playing in bands in the early ‘90s, sold all my guitars and moved to electronic music and released a few albums on the Dutch Quantum records label.
I never thought I would play live again, until I played with Phrozenlight (as the duo Dutch Space Mission) at E-live in Eindhoven, which was great fun! I’m really looking forward to the adventure of playing solo in a new country.
Onstage at Awakenings will be seven synthesizers, several step sequencers, one Gibson Flying V guitar and a lot of effects units, but most importantly me!
For me good music is a feeling, sometimes it is there, sometimes not and I can’t control this. What I can control is preparation, composition and knowledge of all the electronic devices I will use on stage. Does this mean the audience will listen to pre-recorded backing? No! All solos (guitar and synth) will be improvised, as well as some sequences, sound fx, and additional keys.
