Well I have had time to collect my thoughts on last nights Awakenings night and can now offer my review on yet another fantastic night of EM/world music :-)
I arrived about 6:30 and was pleased to see quite a few already there which is encouraging, due to how hot it was and after saying hello to most I spent the rest of the time up until the start outside in the designated SMOKING area LOL. It started a little late but was only 10 mins and didn't seem to make any difference to the proceedings of the night.
Tang opened the night and what a delight they were, some fantastic guitar playing through a looper and series of pedals, accompanied by a nice array of ethnic percussion instruments, both musos worked very well together and built up some great musical pieces all sounding very worldly and non EM which made a pleasant change and I very much enjoyed watching it being made in front of us.
A quick break and a cup of tea and next up was The Blue Lilly Commission, Mr Steven Palmer. I was very much looking forward to seeing what Steve did as i'd spied the 4 strings :-) which never fails to interest me. Some lovely music started to come out of the speakers with Steve playing a nice selection of, again; world instruments, these being pipes of various sorts. He can certainly play them well adding some nice touches to the not overly embellished backing, which was also a nice touch. Jez Creek joined him after a couple of tracks and it increased the interest for me even further as Steve was able to play his bass to leave Jez to do what he does. After settling in nicely the music seemed to flow a lot more smoothly and some very pleasant and different EM music was being played, well done to both Steve and Jez. I did say to Steve afterwards that I would have liked to see the Vishnadub track being played by a full band and thinking back it would have been great to see it all being played by a full band, without the restraints of the strictness of backing, but such is the way of the world, this would probably never happen :-)
Another short break, cup of tea and on with The Cosmicsmokers. I am always a little apprehensive when there are a load of musos on the stage all playing very similar types of gear, thankfully we had Mick on guitar and Steve on drums to give it the balance and there were only a few moments when it got a little chaotic:-) Mick started the music off and I don't think he stopped playing much throughout the whole of the set, some great playing and I was watching the others reactions to various things that were coming from his playing and could see they were enjoying it. Steve did a good job playing along to what the synths were doing and bouncing ideas off what Mick was doing, which created a very live feel to the music. Paul Nagel played some fantastic parts and a great solo piece which will be heard and probably remembered for ever if you purchased a VT, and AirSculpture did what they do best and gave it the overall picture. Most memorable moment for me was when they had just slowed everything down again and there was just a synth pad playing, Mick then fired off on a riff, which sounded like it was off the top of his head, this then inspired Steve to join in with a basic rhythm and the others had no option but to just join in and improvise along, without the use of sequences as these would have probably been out of time. John Christian started a simple bassline and it all just picked up from there for the next 10 mins or so they were jamming, and all looking at Mr Daniel for the nod LOL, great stuff and just goes to show that if there's a drummer and guitarist on there, they can demand the rests attention. The encore was a ten minute build up to what "should be continued" as it was just starting to get to that point when the sequences start and away you go :-)
Once again it was great chatting to everyone and being a part of this EM community. To sum up, I wouldn't have been anywhere else last night:-)

Rather late to the party but ho hum.
Excellent evening of music. Very varied.
Tang were a big surprise, real grower. Blue Lily pretty much as expected, ie very good. Smokers, well could have been a car crash with 6 musicians going different directions, but again was spot on. Respect.
