Been off the proverbial radar for a while. Hoping very much to make it to this one, never seen Pickford live before and really don't want to miss this opportunity. And Magnetron and Peter are the icing on the cake.

Gutted. My partner goes into hospital on the 24th for major gynaecological surgery and will probably be discharged on the Sunday, so this is a no go. Was really wanting to see Pickford live. Looks like a VTwill have be bought instead.

Mmmm.... whats this, everyone waiting for my comments before posting their own LOL :-)
Well here we go, where do I start with this one :-)
Think i'll go for the amount of anticipation I felt from the people in the hall even before the start, the atmosphere was buzzing and probably the first time I have felt that with an Awakenings concert, I think everyone was looking forward to it and knew that something special was in the offing.
Peter was first up after a frantic drive back to Nottingham to get his visuals DVD that he had forgotten to pack, he told me of his out of breath and heart bumping state before he started and if you didn't know this you wouldn't have guessed anything was a miss. I have seen Peter play a fair few times now and over those times his mind set has changed from being tied to his laptop to the fantastic set of his last Spiraleye performance and progressing onto this very gutsy solo appearance. All hardware and a very minimal set up of one synth and a sampler he entertained for a good 50 mins or so that was a mixture of ambient with a few nice sequences being put in all the right places for maximum effect. Top marks to Peter for, in my opinion, heading in the right direction, a great opening set :-)
Magnetron was up next and having a browse around the gear that was set up I knew it was going to be a good one, Mr. Analogue man Xan had a nice array of modern analogue gear to compliment Steve's big stuff and with the pedigree of Xan and Steve a successful performance was almost guaranteed. Steve introduced their start and I think he seems to enjoy talking in public and did a good job. Some fine pieces of music were played and once again totally live with the absolute highlight of the night for me being their second track. The first track seemed to ease us in to what what was a brilliant second piece of music, massive big sounds and well put together. The rest of the set continued to please and I think everyone went into the second break feeling satisfied and I got the impression both Xan and Steve were also satisfied with their performance.
As with Steve, Andy Pickford introduced his own performance, to me he came across as a very likeable chap, genuine and honest and didn't try to pull the wool over anyone's eyes, being open about the fact that he would be playing along to his own backing track, and he explained what he intended to do which set a very comfortable scene. I thoroughly enjoyed the music he played and he did enough with his hands; live, to satisfy a laptop skeptic like me. I would have very much liked to see this using the older gear but he had a lot of patches mapped out and split across his two keyboards and very competently used them in the best way possible, to give himself enough to do to keep very busy for the hour and 15 mins that he was playing. I would say the music resembled other established solo acts I have seen play there but with a more genuine feel to it, I only heard one iffy moment which made it all the more real and added to the character of the performance, and that was only because he got a bit carried away on the pitch bender during a particularly technically challenged section. All in all a fine set.
To sum up a fantastic night out and great to see everyone again also great to see so many had turned up too, I counted 50 in the hall so lets hope this enthusiasm carries on for what is a very fine night out on the EM scene.

It was a great night, one of the best I have witnessed.
Pete Challoner to start with, a very nice ambient set, but with some fine sequencing in there as well, Pete does what he does very well and the set was enjoyable and entertaining with some nice visuals.
Next up Magnetron, and for me the act of the night. A totally mesmerising set guys, In the introduction Steve said around 55 minutes of music, well this flew past, it seemed like you were on for a lot less, I was totally absorbed. Some might call it Berlin School, I wouldn't, this is more English school, it had that English character to it, they both injected their feelings and emotion into the music and performance. I was expecting it to be good, but this was GOOD and then some. That set would have gone down a storm at RH2, I feel sorry for our European cousins, they have just missed out on something very special. Job well done guys.
Finally Andy Pickford, I must say I wasn't a fan of his music from the beginning, I did enjoy his set however, I thought it started off very well, but I felt it went off a little as it went on, and the last piece before the encore sort of brought it back on track. Again what he does is good, it just isn't my cup of tea today.
On the whole then a very enjoyable night, meeting up with the usual suspects, and seeing some new faces and a good attendance. Well done to everyone involved.
