Well I have had a chance to collect my thoughts on another great day yesterday, this is going to be a long one. As everyone has stated it was great to meet up with lots of this EM community and chat and chill in a nice relaxed atmosphere. People whome I have never had the chance to meet were Yolande, Steve P and Duncan Goddard and I thoroughly enjoyed the chats we had, thats not forgetting the usual crowd too, great to mix with such nice people. Good to have a little chat with Steve H and sorry you couldn't enjoy the whole day but work can sometimes get in the way of the enjoyment of life.
Another very well organised event that seemed to pass almost too quickly for me, lots of cups of tea and a nice curry at teatime with Brendan and Paul and a big slice of cake before the curry (bit wrong way around but was nice).
As I only caught the last 20 mins of John Christian's set I cant realy comment on it apart from what I saw and heard was OK, nice that he tried to make it a little more interesting with the flute and drum sections, to be honest I thought for a seasoned "pro" he seemed very nervous and it showed in the fact that when he was doing solo type stuff the volume was very low and he dropped a few bum notes in aswell.
I was never into synthy type pop of the 80t's but enjoyed the Auto Pilot set for what it was, two blokes playing a well rehersed set of songs to a backing and adding some live stuff over the top and vocal that fitted well with the music that was being played. I was mistaken and thought these guys were from Germany and they certainly convinced of that due to the style they were doing, found out later when reading the programme that they were from Sheffield.
You all know, by now, my feelings on playing back stuff off a laptop, I am sorry I feel strongly about this but its just me, I cant get my head around the fact that whats being heard isnt being made there and then and Sefan Erbe seemed to take this almost to the level where he may as well not have been there and just sent a media file with his music on windows media player and his "very good" film I might add. A few plinky plony's and single finger pads dont cut it with me. So what I heard was nice but so uninteresting to see live that unless I saw it differently in his own country, where maybe he could set up a rig that allowed more physical live playing I wouldn't go and see this guy again.
Then came the break and some nice chill out time with everyone, this hour and a half certainly set a pleasant mood for the evening session. Nice chat, a few more cups of tea, curry & cake and a few fags and the evening session was almost upon us. Must not forget the pleasure of watching Norman patch those modulars, thats about as near to the most perfect of live EM music you can get, patching a modular half hour before set up cut off time.
The evening session went just like a normal Awakenings night apart from one aspect and I think we all know what that was, the opening act stole the show :-)
Phobos had me sucked in after about ten mins and there was only him and I in that hall for the next 50 mins or so, skipping from awesome low drones through mellow drifting mids to high sweet tonal variations that got right behind my eyes. A solo "LIVE" set of dark ambient sounds from laptop VST's controlled superbly using two keyboards. If ever there was a way of a solo performer using a laptop and VST's, this was the perfect example for me. I dont know how David stood up all the way through it such was the intensity and concentration on his face and he looked physically drained afterwards, I know I was LOL, well done to you David and thanks for giving us another glimps into your world of sound.
Another cup of tea and a fag and next up was Vietgrove +1, this set came second in my book, some lovely modular and live synth work from Norman, who never fails to offer up an interesting show to watch with his command of the gear and the visuals he provides, although I am generally more into watching what norman is doing more so than the films that are playing. Like Steven has stated it did get a little chaotic towards the end but thats live improvised EM and everyone on stage wants a piece of the action :-) Mark played some very nice guitar and then at other times a bit "well what do I do now" sort of feel, jez worked well with them but thought at times that VCS3 took away some of the subtleties of what was going on in the background, and I'll get to this a little more in the next section. Safe to say Vietgrove's set was enjoyed very much by me with +1 adding a little extra element.
Yes youve guessed it, another cup of tea and a fag and I was ready to enjoy Ideation. I have seen Paul and Pete play a few times now and I do like the music they come up with, mainly sequencer based with the odd ambient and FX sections that cool things down before firing off the sequences again, the standard BS EM format I suppose. I have a lot of respect for people who entertain me with live output and Jez has no less respect from me than most other musicians in this genre but i'm affraid I dont think this collab worked at all for me, two completely different aspects of delivering music that just didnt seemed to gel. The VCS3 is an awesome sounding old synth but the modulation and FX timing of it killed the sonic subtleties of what Paul and Pete were trying to portray, I was straining to try and hear what was going on underneath it, sorry for being so blunt and honest Jez but you were a part of the second and third place sets for me on the day and yes I know its not a competition but human nature always plays a part when things like multi acts concerts take place, so not all bad :-)
I am very, very pleased that Burton is to continue next year and fairplay to all concerned for getting it to this point and beyond, top marks to Phil, Jez and Dave for believing in the ethos that Jez started many moons ago and long live Live EM. At the end of the day we can all listen to and enjoy CD's in our cars, homes and ipods, but only those that have a thirst for hearing it made live can keep this going so also a big thanks from me to everyone in the audience and VT land for keeping music live:-)

PS. - I don't think I saw Yolande? At least, I didn't recognise her. Well, I was there and I am still blonde. I didn't see you too tbh. Pitty...

Martyn, I couldn't have written a review that came anywhere near as close to expressing my own thoughts as you have with yours.
