8-)A nice start to the awakenings season that kicked off with 3 very different acts, although I missed the first 20 mins of Nick Robinson I enjoyed what I saw, with some fine controlled looped guitar and then joined for 20 mins by Jez that yeilded a nice improv. Second thought did quite a beat laden set from a laptop and controller which wouldnt have been out of place at the Cafe del mar or some other chillout club on Ibiza. And then came a wonderful hour of improved experimental music from Endgame, it captivated me from the first few minutes and drew me in, adding various interest along the way using a variety of different sound making toys All in all a pleasant night with some fine music, catching up and chatting, considering I was supposed to be at an engagement party ;D

Well it's Awakenings time again. It's always worth coming to a gig even if the weathers dreadfull which it was there and back.
Here are my thoughts:-
Nick Robinson
Seen Nick a few times, so I knew I would enjoy his set. Great ambient guitar loops evolving into a wonderful wall sound.
Interesting treatments of the loops with what I thought was a filter device?
Nick's set also included a Special Guest which Dave Buxton spoilt the suprise. Highly amusing.
The Special Guest turned out to be out estemed Forum Master Jez who brought the set to a great end.
Second Thought
I was really looking forward to Ross's set. I have really liked what I've heard so far. He certainly has his own unique style, the only other comparison I could come up with is some of the more ambient bits of Spyra's work.
His set consisted of beats, natural atmospheres, beautiful and haunting melodies with some Berlin School esque sequences. Wonderful stuff. I hope to see Ross play live again soon.
It goes to show you don't need ton's of equipment to come with a great sound, it's about talent and imagination which Ross has in abundance.
Nice to have a chat afterwards. What was the website Dave mentioned?
End Game
I have heard of the Freeman Brothers through the Ultima Thule shop. Their output is in the more experimental music realms, so I was expecting an abstract set, which is indeed what we got.
Quite an intresting selection of equipment on stage with the three members of End Game (which included Jim Tetlow). Quite a lot of bowed sounds, abstact atmospherics, taped sounds were included in the soundscape. I even saw one of the brothers making sounds with a compact disc with bow being pulled across it (which Dave amusingly said later 'a different way of playing a cd') and what looked like a circular object with a contact mike being scratched and hit with a mallet. You don't see that everday.
For me it was a bit hard going an hour of experimental sound with little melodics is a lot to take in. A know I lot of people like that kind of thing.
Having said that Awakeings is all about variety which makes it a very interesting series of gigs.
To sum up a very enjoyable night, again. Good to see many different faces there, I suspect quite a few come from the experimental music night which Jez's attends regularly and came to see End Game. I hope they come to other gig's.

i had a fun night, especially enjoyed my bit with nick, and it was spoiled only by some recording problems, which hopefully i'll be able to fix for the vt
i had been a bit worried about this one, as it was an eclectic line-up with no trad em names on the bill, but the turnout was the best ever for the february gig
everyone who was playing said they enjoyed it, as did quite a few audience members, so i'm pretty happy if tired

An enjoyable evening last night, it was great meeting people again and meeting Ross and Lucy for the first time. My favourite set was Second Thought which had a nice blend of styles. Many thanks to Jez for letting me stay at Chez de Jez. ---- Below are photos from the gig (separated in posts due to max size limit): Ross setting up: Attachments:
