;D Glad it is going well Jez, what is the turnout like compared to the UK. All the best. just noticed this - turnouts were comparable with the UK, i.e. audiences were small but lovely as ever I think the only thing that gets a 'large' turnout is The Gatherings, but I'd be surprised if even that's much more than a good Awakenings

and they tour lots and lots, unlike most EM acts, who only play the odd gig in comparison I said this in a message months ago. Bands years ago would play for virtually nothing to get known and build up a fan base. The EM scene has been the same since day one. We all know the amount of amazing EM artists in this country never mind the rest of the world. As an EM fan of over 40 years it pi.sses me off that the only EM artists most people can name are Vangelis, Jarre and TD. Artists have to get known whatever the genre, simple as.

Nobody in the EM scene is going to get a massive audience, but if you want the younger, larger audience that acts like Emeralds get then you need to either send demos off to labels who actually do promo campaigns, or send off promos yourself to every music magazine, blog and radio station there is. And yes, playing gigs - branching out beyond the safety of those people here routinely organise and/or attend - will also get your name known and potentially add interest. Whatever happens, the audience won't come looking for you, you need to do the work!
That's if people want to do that. A lot of people are content being part of a small niche, and that's fine. There has been a huge resurgence of interest in synth music within the modern 'electronica' crowd and it's a shame that none of the veterans have made anything of it, but I get the feeling most in the EM scene are very happy with their own fanbase, particularly as most people in the scene know each other so it's warm and friendly (as long as you're part of the in crowd, it seems).

I agree, you have to be prepared to get out and promote yourself like the old days, trouble is there aren't the venues willing to put EM acts on due to the lack of interest from punters, its a vicious circle for those that want to try and do something live on a more regular basis.

I think the more 'progressive' end of the EM scene would definitely struggle to find gigs outside of the scene, but those with an ambient or experimental touch could find gigs in cities if they focused on that end of things.
