Is this a permanent venue change or just for this event? We can't use Paget anymore, due to a combination of factors Luckily Martyn was already planning something at Lea Hall so we knew of it and were able to get our dates booked Hopefully it will work out, if not we'll be looking for somewhere else for next year!

I've qualified for the final of a competition on 20th August so may have to miss your event unfortunately In fact, at the moment I can't make either the May or July events because of events I'm competing in. Good job there is the Virtual Ticket to fall back on

This is going to be a long one I think LOL smile emoticon Right then where do I start, well first of all, seeing so many fans of electronic music with smiles on their faces and enjoying themselves would almost rate as top of the pile for me smile emoticon After a forced move from a nice theatre type venue that was Paget, to what is in fact a typical village hall could well have dampened everyone’s enthusiasm for venturing out to the next Awakenings of the year, but it didn’t and in fact it attracted a few new faces to the faithful and also some returning older faces too. That is the spirit of Awakenings and what it stands for so thanks all. If I can just add a little bit about how I have become involved, so that it explains the reason why this venue was chosen. Just less than a month ago I put a tentative post on Facebook regarding what would be a suitable portable PA system for use in a small venue and having the Lea Hall Pavilion in mind to put on a half day event of my own. Anyway one thing lead to another and after a discussion with Adrian Hendy, who immediately offered his help as a sound and lighting tech and also with Jez and Phil, who offered to help, we agreed on organising a half day concert for 20th Aug and a jam session/test run on 5th June to have a practice at setting the hall up for a public electronic music event. During these conversations Phil indicated that Paget was in jeopardy and would I enquire about a possible availability for the 7th May and that is the reason Lea Hall was chosen and booked. Two weeks ago Phil and Dave came to have a look at the hall and the general layout and were happy with what they saw, Phil liaised with Ron and co who indicated that they were still happy to come and play and ticket sales were reopened for the concert.
On with show and the 7th May arrived, I got to the hall at 11:45am and within a short time Phil arrived with Ron, Harold, Eric, Rene, Jef and Esther, with Adrian and Sian arriving very soon after. We all got on with transferring the gear from the van to the hall and there was a lot of it. Dave Buxton arrived and then shortly afterwards Jez Creek. The guys set it all up with great accuracy to enable their own comfort whilst performing and also with the comfort and safety of the audience in mind. Much fun was had during this time and I took the opportunity to get some snips of video whilst they were sound checking and some photos. When the guys had completed their set up and were satisfied that everything was good to go, we then set the hall up for the audience seating and it ended up looking like a very nice comfortable environment for the concert. An hour or so to kill and everyone had their food, Jez decided to have an alfresco jam on the field and myself, Dave and Steve Smith, who had travelled all the way from the Isle of white (thanks for all your help Steve) went to have a listen. I got a few more snips of video and some photos of this too. An old friend Steve Humphries arrived and ventured down the field to us where we had a pleasant chat. I had a quick trip home and I’ll spare the reason why.
The hall had now started to fill up with a very enthusiastic, friendly and positive crowd and the bar had opened for business as we settled down for the first delight of the concert. Rene Splinter started to play and filled the hall with its first ever taste of EM, beautiful melodic piano and synth compositions that entertained us for the next 30 mins or so. A fantastic solo set and opening to the night. After a short break it was time for the second solo spot.
Eric van der Heijden played for us a wonderful set of music comprising of a number of short pieces and a lovely informative tutorial section when he explained how he enjoys making music in his home music studio using just a handful of synths and performance gear from his vast collection. This gave us a nice insight into how his music and some electronic music in general is composed and played. Another fantastic live solo spot from Eric which left us all going into the interval feeling very satisfied and suitably entertained. During Eric’s spot a second member joined in with the music, this being Mother Nature, she added some lovely “real” storm sounds and a timely thunder clap at the end. This may not have been captured on the VT unfortunately but it was a very unique moment to witness.
The main interval of the evening came whilst waiting for it to get a little darker outside to enable the full effect of the lightshow. This gave us plenty of time to chat with many heading outside to take in the fresh evening air after the storm.
The main hall lights were lowered once again and Ron and Harold commenced their set, what a fantastic duo they are. Ron was weaving his Klaus Shultz magic, multiple sequences running alongside beautiful atmospheric chord structures and blistering lead solos. Harold was teasing out the dynamics in the music with just the right amount of percussion playing, holding off until bringing in the full on drum beat and moving the music to another level. Lasers danced through the dry ice and ever changing light clusters added to the fantastic spectacle. At this point I could have been in a 1500 seated concert venue watching this memorable talented duo creating live music, sheer bliss. Another short break and Rene and Eric took to their gear again for the final entertainment of the night. UniSphere are a recent collaboration and very fresh sounding in their approach which offered up some quite original music to which we were treated too, we were all being “uniSphered” as Eric stated during the performance. They were playing along to a much more demure lightshow with Ron controlling the changes and adding subtle mood changing colours to the music. This had been another fantastic show of music and light. As these guys had travelled some distance to come and play for us I don’t think anyone wanted it to end but all good thing have to eventually and Dave took to the mic for the final time, announcing the many thank you’s and credits to what had been another success in the Awakenings story. I would like to close with a massive thanks to Ron, Harold, Eric, Rene and Jef for making the first one at Lea Hall Pavilion a very special memorable occasion. Also thanks to everyone in the audience both on the night and in VT land and lastly the Awakenings team for keeping the music live. I am now looking forward to the next one in July so hope to see some of you there, thanks again. Martyn
