Ydd Hwnt y Seren a Llygedin: Originally recorded between March and June 2006. 66m53s.
Released on the Umbra label under catalogue number Umbra 059.
The translation from the Welsh is ‘Realms Beyond the Stars and Light’;
“Following the release of ‘Stellar Nurseries’ exploring the birth of our solar system, I found myself drawn to the apparent infinite emptiness between the lights of the stars and galaxies.
As a child I used to lie for hours staring at the stars, reaching out to touch infinity. I now know that the emptiness contains structures so large they give the galaxies their shape, that the stillness is full of unimaginable speeds and movement.
These tracks are what I distilled in this moment of time and I sense that like the Child I once was, I will return again and again to wander in the realms of infinity….”
The three tracks explore different aspects of space between the stars.
Oort Cloud (21m24s) is about the huge halo of primeval objects that expand from well outside our solar system to, well, even further….It is the source of all our comets, those that stream past us having had their original orbits disturbed by something passing them and pulling them into the long fall toward the sun. I imagine some travel in the opposite direction as well, into an even longer and darker journey.
Between the Distant Shoals of Lights (24m44s) is about the spaces between stars and galaxies – so far away that they seem like distant shoals of silver fish in a dark sea. So far away that if we could watch for long enough we would see galaxies turning in very small circles and groups of galaxies gliding around each other, tied together by gravity and motion.
Beyond (20m43S) is about the space beyond what we can see, outside the visible universe, so far away that even the light there has not been able to reach us, or ever will.
The album was recorded on the Korg D16 with Technics KN1400 keyboard used as a keyboard for the Novation Supernova rack synth.
the artwork on the cover is my own.
Ydd Hwnt y Seren a Llygedin is still available in the Umbra edition from Oophoi via the www.deeplistenings.net website.
